How to earn from referral programs in Nigeria (2026)
By the Hawkit New team · · 6 min read
You earn from referral programmes in Nigeria by sharing a code for an app or service you actually use, and getting paid when the people you bring in sign up and use it. The legitimate ones pay out of real fees the company earns. The fake ones pay mainly out of what new recruits put in.
That difference decides whether you earn a small, steady bonus or help a scheme take your friends' money. Here's how to tell them apart and how to share without becoming the person everyone mutes.
How do referral bonuses work in Nigeria?
A company pays you because acquiring a customer through you is cheaper than through adverts. The bonus usually depends on the person you referred doing something that earns the company money, such as making transactions, saving, buying an item or paying a fee. Sign-up alone often pays nothing.
Two real examples show the pattern:
- Moniepoint. Its 2023 personal banking referral programme paid referrers ₦4 for each interbank transaction a referred customer made over the following 12 months. Moniepoint relaunched its referral programme in 2024, and the current rates may differ, so check the Earn section of the app.
- PiggyVest. Its FAQ describes a 2% bonus for the referrer when a new customer uses their link to save towards an item on GetIT and completes the purchase.
Notice what both have in common. The money comes from activity that produces revenue: transfer fees for Moniepoint, a completed purchase for PiggyVest. The bonus is small per person, and it only adds up if many people you refer keep using the product.
Affiliate programmes are a close cousin. Online stores such as Jumia and Konga have run affiliate schemes that pay a percentage when someone buys through your link. Same logic: the store pays you from a real sale, so you only earn when your audience buys something they wanted anyway. Rates differ by product category, so check the store's current affiliate page rather than a blog post from two years ago.
One more pattern to know. A genuine programme never asks you to pay money to "release" a bonus you've already earned. If an app says your referral earnings are waiting but you must deposit, upgrade or pay a "withdrawal activation" first, treat it as a scam.
Terms change often. Before you promote any code, open the app's referral page and read three things: what the friend has to do, when you get paid, and any cap or expiry.
How is a referral bonus different from a Ponzi or pyramid scheme?
A real referral bonus is a marketing cost paid from a business's revenue. A Ponzi or pyramid pays earlier members with money from newer ones. Under the Investments and Securities Act 2025, the SEC defines a Ponzi as a scheme that pays existing contributors with funds collected from new contributors while promising high returns with little or no risk.
Ask one question: if nobody new joined from tomorrow, would anyone still get paid? For Moniepoint, yes, because people keep making transfers. For a scheme where you pay ₦5,000 to join and earn by recruiting three others who also pay ₦5,000, no. It stops the day recruiting slows.
| Sign | Real referral programme | Ponzi or pyramid |
|---|---|---|
| Where the money comes from | Fees, sales or advertising the company earns | Deposits and joining fees from new members |
| What you need to pay | Usually nothing | A joining fee, "package" or deposit |
| What your friend gets | A product they can use | A promise of returns or more recruiting |
| Promised earnings | Small, fixed per action | High, guaranteed or "passive" |
| Registered where needed | Licensed by CBN or SEC if handling money or investments | Often unregistered |
The cost of getting this wrong is real. CBEX, a digital asset platform that promised to double people's money, collapsed in April 2025 and left thousands unable to withdraw, TechCabal reported. Two months later the SEC warned that it had resurfaced and was asking users to pay $100 or $200 before releasing their funds, according to Nairametrics.
In May 2026 the SEC warned Nigerians again about unregistered investment schemes spreading on WhatsApp, TikTok, Instagram, Telegram and Facebook, and told people to check registration on its verification portal. Our guide on how to spot a Ponzi scheme walks through that check.
How can you earn from referrals without spamming people?
Recommend things you use, to people who need them, at the moment they're asking. That's it. Dropping a link in every WhatsApp group you're in gets you muted and earns almost nothing, because nobody trusts a link from someone who hasn't said why.
What works better:
- Answer real questions. When a friend asks "which app has cheap transfers?" or "how do I save for rent?", reply with your honest experience and your code.
- Say you earn a bonus. People trust a disclosed referral more than a disguised one, and hiding it can cost you friends when they find out.
- Write once, properly. A single status post or short TikTok explaining how you use the app, what it costs and what annoyed you will outperform 30 copy-paste messages.
- Match the product to the audience. A savings app suits colleagues. A data app suits students. A business account suits traders in your market.
- Don't promise income. If you're referring someone to an earning platform, tell them the pay is small and depends on what's available.
If you run a WhatsApp TV or a large status audience, our guide to starting a WhatsApp TV covers building trust before you promote anything.
My opinion: referrals work best as a side effect of being the person friends ask for advice, not as a hustle you chase. People who try to make referrals their main income usually end up promoting whatever pays the highest bonus, and that is often the riskiest thing on offer.
How does the Hawkit New referral programme work?
You earn ₦500 when someone you refer pays the one-time ₦1,000 activation fee, plus 5% of any ad deposits they make if they advertise on the platform. During the launch offer, the first 10,000 people can claim an account free, and those free claims pay no referral bonus.
Because we've just argued that you should check where referral money comes from, here it is plainly. The ₦500 comes out of the activation fee your friend pays. The 5% comes out of what advertisers spend. Task rewards, the money people earn for WhatsApp status posts and social-media tasks, are funded by advertisers, not by new sign-ups, so they don't depend on recruiting. You can earn from tasks without referring anyone at all.
Tasks open on Wednesday 4 November 2026. Hawkit New is new, so judge it the way this guide suggests: by whether it does what it says.
Pick one app you've used for at least a month and trust. Open its referral page, read what your friend must do and when you get paid, then write one honest message explaining how you use it and that you earn a bonus. Send it only to the people who'd actually find it useful.
Questions
Which apps pay for referrals in Nigeria?
Many Nigerian fintech and savings apps run referral programmes, including Moniepoint and PiggyVest, but the amounts and conditions change often. Moniepoint has paid referrers a small amount per transaction made by people they referred, and PiggyVest has offered a percentage on some referred purchases. Check the app's own referral page for current terms.
Is a referral bonus the same as a Ponzi scheme?
No. A real referral bonus is paid by a company from revenue it earns when the person you referred uses a product, such as transaction fees. In a Ponzi or pyramid, the main or only income comes from new people joining and paying in. If recruiting stopped and the payouts would stop too, walk away.
How can I get people to use my referral code without spamming?
Share it where people already ask for recommendations, explain what the product does and what it costs them, and say plainly that you earn a bonus. One honest post or review that answers real questions works better than dropping your link in 20 WhatsApp groups.
Do I need to pay to join a referral program?
For most legitimate fintech referral programmes, no. You use the app, get your code and share it. Be careful with any scheme where you must pay a fee or deposit to start earning, and where the pay depends mostly on recruiting others who also pay. That is the shape the SEC warns about.
How does the Hawkit New referral bonus work?
You earn ₦500 when someone you refer pays the one-time ₦1,000 activation, plus 5% of any ad deposits they make as an advertiser. Accounts claimed free during the first-10,000 offer don't pay a referral bonus. Task rewards on Hawkit New are funded by advertisers, not by sign-ups.
