How to make money on YouTube in Nigeria in 2026
By the Hawkit New team · · 6 min read
You make money on YouTube in Nigeria by getting into the YouTube Partner Program, which pays ad revenue through Google AdSense once you have 1,000 subscribers and enough watch time, and by earning outside YouTube through brand deals and your own products. AdSense pays Nigerians by wire transfer. The hard part isn't payment. It's the year or so of consistent uploads before the numbers add up.
How do you start a YouTube channel in Nigeria?
You need a Google account, a phone that records decent video, and an idea you can make 50 videos about. Creating the channel takes ten minutes. Picking a niche you won't get bored of takes longer, and it matters more. "How to start a YouTube channel" was one of the top "how to start" searches in Nigeria in January 2026, Nairametrics reported, so you won't be the only one starting.
- Sign in to YouTube with a Google account, tap your profile picture and choose "Create a channel". Use a name you'd be happy to see on a brand deal invoice.
- Write a one-line description of who the channel is for. "Honest phone reviews for Nigerians on a budget" beats "Tech, lifestyle and more".
- Add a profile picture and a simple banner. Canva's free templates are fine.
- Plan your first ten videos before you record any. If you can't list ten, pick a different niche.
- Record, edit on your phone (CapCut and YouTube's own editor are free), and upload with a clear title and a custom thumbnail.
- Upload on a fixed schedule. Once a week is plenty if you can keep it up for a year.
Shorts are good for getting found. Long videos are where watch hours and higher ad revenue come from. Most channels that grow do both: Shorts to pull people in, longer videos to keep them.
What are the YouTube Partner Program requirements in 2026?
There are two tiers. The lower one needs 500 subscribers, three public uploads in the last 90 days, and either 3,000 public watch hours in the last 12 months or 3 million Shorts views in 90 days. Full ad revenue needs 1,000 subscribers plus 4,000 watch hours or 10 million Shorts views.
YouTube sets these out in its Partner Program explainer and its help page on the expanded Partner Program. Here's how the tiers compare.
| Lower tier | Full monetisation | |
|---|---|---|
| Subscribers | 500 | 1,000 |
| Recent uploads | 3 public uploads in 90 days | Not separately required |
| Watch time route | 3,000 public watch hours in 12 months | 4,000 public watch hours in 12 months |
| Shorts route | 3 million Shorts views in 90 days | 10 million Shorts views in 90 days |
| What you can earn | Fan funding (channel memberships, Super Chat, Super Thanks), some Shopping features | Everything above plus ad revenue and YouTube Premium revenue share |
A few things trip people up. Watch hours and Shorts views don't combine, so you have to clear one route fully. You also need no active Community Guidelines strikes, two-step verification on your Google account, and a linked AdSense account. The lower tier isn't available in every country, so check the Earn tab in YouTube Studio to see what your channel can apply for. Some third-party guides report the full-monetisation thresholds will rise in 2027; I couldn't confirm that on YouTube's own pages, so treat it as unconfirmed until YouTube announces it.
Don't try to shortcut the subscriber count. YouTube's fake engagement policy bans artificially increasing views, likes, comments or subscribers, including through services that claim to use real accounts, and channels can be terminated for it.
How does AdSense pay YouTubers in Nigeria?
By wire transfer to a bank account. Once you're in the Partner Program, your YouTube earnings go into your AdSense account. When the balance passes the payment threshold (US$100 for most accounts), Google sends the money in a monthly payment run. You add your bank details, including the SWIFT code, in AdSense under Payments.
Western Union used to be the common route for Nigerians. That ended for new setups: Google's AdSense help centre says that from 10 August 2020 Western Union could no longer be selected as a new payment method. If you're reading an old Nigerian blog that tells you to collect AdSense money at a Western Union agent, close the tab.
A few practical points:
- Domiciliary account. Many Nigerian creators receive AdSense payments into a USD domiciliary account so they choose when to convert to naira. Ask your bank what it charges for inward SWIFT transfers.
- Address verification. AdSense posts a PIN to your address once you reach a small balance. Make sure your address is complete and someone will be there to receive it.
- Tax info. Fill in the US tax form in AdSense. If you skip it, Google may withhold more from your earnings.
- Names must match. The name on your AdSense account should match your bank account exactly, or the transfer can bounce.
If you also earn on other platforms, our guide to withdrawing online earnings to a Nigerian bank covers the rest.
Which YouTube niches work for Nigerian audiences?
The niches that work are ones where you solve a specific problem for a specific person, and where you can keep going for years. Nigerian audiences watch a lot of comedy and entertainment, but that space is crowded. Practical, searchable content is easier to grow because people find it on Google and YouTube search long after you post.
Niches worth a look:
- Tech and phone reviews priced in naira, for people deciding what to buy
- Personal finance for Nigerians: savings apps, investing basics, side hustles
- Education and exam prep for WAEC, JAMB and university students
- Food, especially affordable Nigerian recipes with current market prices
- Skills tutorials: Excel, graphic design, coding, video editing
- Faith and motivation, which already has a big Nigerian audience
Ad rates matter too. Advertisers pay more to reach viewers in countries with higher spending power, so a channel watched mostly in Nigeria may earn less per view than one with a big UK or US audience. That's one reason I'd tell most Nigerian YouTubers to plan for brand deals and their own products from day one, rather than waiting for AdSense to carry them.

What equipment do you need to start YouTube on a budget?
A smartphone, a clip-on microphone and a way to hold the phone steady. That's it to start. Most phones from the last few years film good enough 1080p video in daylight. Bad audio makes people click away faster than slightly soft video, so the microphone comes first.
| Item | What to look for | Price guide |
|---|---|---|
| Smartphone | The one you already have | ₦0 |
| Clip-on (lavalier) mic | Boya BY-M1 or similar wired lav | Jumia Nigeria listings range from about ₦10,000 to over ₦40,000 depending on seller and bundle |
| Tripod or phone stand | Any stable stand with a phone clamp | Check current listings; prices vary widely |
| Lighting | A window during the day | ₦0 to start |
| Editing app | CapCut or the YouTube editor | Free |
Data is a real cost in Nigeria. A single 10-minute video in 1080p can run to hundreds of megabytes, and you'll upload, re-upload and watch your own analytics. After the telecom tariff increase in February 2025, MTN's 20GB plan rose to ₦7,500, according to Nairametrics. Upload on Wi-Fi when you can, or schedule big uploads for times when your network is fastest.
While you're building, some creators pick up small earnings from YouTube tasks. On Hawkit New's YouTube tasks, opening Wednesday 4 November 2026, advertisers typically pay ₦30 to ₦200 for subscribing or watching. That's pocket money for data, not a way to grow your own channel, and paying for subscribers to your own channel can run into YouTube's rules above.
Today, write down ten video ideas for one niche. If you get to ten without forcing it, record the first one this week on your phone, with a clip-on mic if you have one, and upload it by Sunday.
Questions
How many subscribers do you need to get paid on YouTube?
For ad revenue, 1,000 subscribers plus either 4,000 public watch hours in the last 12 months or 10 million Shorts views in 90 days. A lower tier at 500 subscribers, 3,000 watch hours or 3 million Shorts views opens fan funding such as memberships and Super Thanks where available.
How does YouTube pay Nigerians?
Through Google AdSense. Once your balance reaches the payment threshold, Google sends a wire transfer to the bank account you add in AdSense. Western Union stopped being selectable as a new payment method in August 2020. Many Nigerian creators use a domiciliary account to receive dollars.
Can I start a YouTube channel with just my phone?
Yes. A recent smartphone records good enough video for most channels. Spend your first money on a clip-on microphone, because viewers forgive average video far more than bad sound. Add a cheap tripod and use daylight from a window before buying lights.
How long does it take to monetise a YouTube channel in Nigeria?
There's no standard timeline. Some channels qualify in months, many never do. Posting consistently in one niche for at least a year is a realistic expectation before ad money matters. Brand deals and selling your own products often pay before AdSense does.
Is it safe to buy YouTube subscribers to reach 1,000 faster?
No. YouTube's fake engagement policy bans artificially increasing views, likes, comments or subscribers, and channels that break it can be terminated. Fake subscribers also don't watch, which drags down the signals YouTube uses to recommend your videos.
